Virtual reality, the not so far future of video games

Project Morpheus is the key name that Sony assigned to their new project of virtual reality. As of now, Morpheus is based on a single display with a high Field of View (FOV), movement tracking of 6 axis, 3 dimension stereoscopic and video output to connect a TV so you can observe what the player using the Morpheus is watching without missing the action.

Virtual reality is hardly something new but the interesting aspect is that this device was design to be hundred percent functional with the PlayStation 4 and at some level, PS Vita support.
Recently PM made an appearance in the GamesCom Germany, it was open for the public to try it out, some lucky gamers able to assist to the convention had a chance to try/use this new move in the gaming industry and one of those lucky b……s shared his entire experience with us and highlighted the following aspects:
-The difference

“Is not the same to play on the TV or with a screen pasted on your eyes”
The experience is unique and the display not only works as a image projector but also isolate you from the rest of the world, generating a far superior engagement level compare to a regular screen.
This VR headset allow us to take part of a game in a more personal way and intuitive because of the head tracking which is basically 1:1.

-Comfort

The headset used in the show was very light and comfortable, thanks to a very futuristic design, the weight is distributed evenly which helps to avoid over pressure over the neck and/or nose.

The gap below the eyes was improved preventing that less of the external world gets in between us and the game. Personally I was worried about the fact that I could get dizzy with the headset but that was not the case, although it might happen to others.

-General experience

Using the VR display is a little complicated to expose with just words since there are several factors to take into account, some that many have never experience before. In the Gamescom we had the chance to try The Deep, a game that puts you in a cage in the middle of the ocean and lets you interact with a shark, honestly the experience was overwhelming. Since this is not an end-product but a prototype, there were certain areas in which the controller was unresponsive and the image definition although overall good was not really impressive, but even in this early stage of the device it did not fail to transport us to another world, where you sweat your pants when the shark is close to the cage, where the line between was real and what is not, is so thin that our brain forgets that the real world exist.
